Launch of the Mauritius Arbitration Academy

Date: 05 Avril 2022

Alexis Merle: “The Academy, in collaboration with the MARC, will undoubtedly cater for the rising demand for improved expertise and training of arbitration practitioners in Mauritius…”

The Mauritius Arbitration Academy was launched by the Middlesex University on Tuesday the 29th of April 2022.

Present on this occasion, the Registrar of the Mediation & Arbitration Center Mauritius Ltd (MARC), Alexis Merle highlighted that this initiative is in line with the objective of Mauritius to place itself as the most suitable seat in the Indian Ocean Region for hosting both domestic and international arbitration disputes.

The event also saw the participation of law practitioners, members of the Middlesex academia and former Supreme Court Judge Bhushan Domah.

In his speech, Alexis Merle stated that efficient business dispute resolution is now increasingly being recognised by business operators worldwide as part of key management considerations. He further explained that this is where institutional arbitration, as an alternative to proceedings before state courts, can provide an excellent alternative dispute solution. “By including in their business contracts an arbitration clause, ideally incorporating by reference the rules of an arbitration institution, such as those of the MARC, a business operator has the certainty that when a dispute occurs, it will be resolved efficiently as per a process jointly agreed with the other party,” he said.

The Registrar added that the MARC will endeavour to collaborate with the Mauritius Arbitration Academy to sensitize the business operators about the benefits of using arbitration, to constantly provide training in arbitration practice and developing best practices and to organise arbitration events, trainings and conferences around the island.

“The Mauritius Arbitration Academy, in collaboration with the MARC, will undoubtedly cater for the rising demand for improved expertise and training of arbitration practitioners in Mauritius and will expose young practitioners to the current trends and developments in international commercial and investment arbitration”, concluded the MARC Registrar.
