Gala Dinner held in honor of Lord Neuberger's visit to Mauritius

MARC welcomed Lord Neuberger for a Gala Dinner on 11 April 2018. Lord Neuberger delivered a speech on 'Arbitration: Facilitating Investment in Africa' on the occasion. The Hon. Maneesh Gobin, Attorney General, Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Institutional Reforms and the Hon. Nandcoomar Bodha, GCSK, Minister of Public Infrastructure and Land Transport also graced the event with their presence. The welcome address was delivered by the President of the MCCI, Mr. Marday Venkatasamy.

Lord Neuberger highlighted in his speech the role of Mauritius as an efficient venue for the arbitration of commercial and investment disputes. He stated that:

"Mauritius has [...] very unusual characteristics which I think should add considerably to its attraction on the international dispute resolution stage. Thanks to its history, Mauritius is bilingual in French and English, and Mauritian law is a mixture of common law from the UK and civil law from France. That means that, as an arbitration centre, Mauritius has an unusually internationalist and wide legal appeal. The common law is of course very attractive in the world of business, but civil law systems are more common across the countries of the world."

The event was well attended by key members of the legal and business community of Mauritius as well as by members of the judiciary.
