East Africa International Arbitration Conference 2020 – 8th edition

MARC participated in the 8th edition of the East Africa International Arbitration Conference 2020 (EAIAC) which took place virtually on 27 and 28 August 2020, as one of its Strategic Partners.
This year’s EAIAC theme was “Disruption and Innovation in International Arbitration in Africa”.
The Head of MARC, Ms Dipna Gunnoo was invited to speak about virtual hearings from the perspective of an African centre during a panel which focused on “Technology and Innovation in Arbitration”. The moderator of this panel was Ms Elizabeth Oger-Gross (Partner, White & Case, Paris, France), and the other speakers were Ms Faith Macharia (Partner, Anjarwalla & Khanna, Nairobi, Kenya) who spoke from the Counsel’s perspective, Dr Fidele Masengo (Secretary General, Kigali International Arbitration Centre, Kigali, Rwanda) who also shared his views on virtual hearings from an African centre’s perspective, Prof. Mohamed Abdel Wahab (Partner, Zulficar & Partners, Cairo, Egypt) who elaborated on virtual hearings from the Tribunal’s perspective.
This virtual conference attracted delegates from private investors, government departments, legal practitioners, investors, members of the judiciary and arbitration professionals and attracted expert speakers drawn from both the public and private sectors, including arbitration institutions from various countries and international law firms.
