Commercial Mediation workshop for economic operators

Commercial Mediation: The MARC organizes a workshop for economic operators

What is commercial mediation? What are the advantages, for businesses, to turn to commercial mediation instead of litigating in court? This was at the centre of a workshop organised by the Mediation and Arbitration Center (Mauritius) Ltd (MARC) on Tuesday 24 January 2023. Held at the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, Port Louis, the event brought together more than twenty high officials from private sector companies and parastatal bodies. It also saw the participation of two experts, namely Me Narghis Bundhun, Senior Counsel (SC) and Mr. Thierry Ollivry, Certified Professional Mediator, who walked the participants through this alternative dispute resolution recourse. For two hours, the audience had the opportunity to discuss with the two experts. The highly interactive session, with known cases being cited as examples, allowed businesspeople to better grasp the concept and advantages of commercial mediation, as well as its implications.

In his opening speech the Chairman of MARC, Guillaume Hugnin, highlighted the following: “The purpose of today’s workshop is to enlighten you, economic operators, as well as other professionals as to the benefits of having recourse to mediation in resolving commercial disputes and so that you understand how it differs to court litigation”. He encouraged public and private companies to be acquainted with commercial mediation and to discover the services provided by the MARC.

The Registrar of MARC, Mr. Alexis Merle added that MARC will be launching a series of accredited training in mediation this year in collaboration with the International Dispute Resolution and Risk Management Institute of Hong-Kong.
